The Place de l'Alma, Where Princess Diana and the Flame of Liberty Endure, 12 Years On

Princess Diana was killed in the tunnel beneath the Place de l'Alma just after midnight on the morning of August 31, 1997. I arrived at the scene a few minutes after the crash and reported from the place and from the hospital until after dawn. "The Flame of Liberty" memorial was in place aready. It had been erected in 1989 with money raised by the International Herald Tribune to commemorate 100 years of publishing in Paris, but mourners and tourists quickly adopted it as a monument to the late princess. Elsewhere in the place, life goes on as normal.
